JAZZ AMBASSADOR PHOTO JOURNAL |
August 29th, 2004
This city was one of the hilights of tour, not so much because of the culture or historical sights (we didn't have time to see anything!) but more so because of the people we met and welcome we received.
We spent a bit of time with Paul Berg, Head of U.S. Embassy Medan Affairs Office, at his residence where we were treated to a delightful lunch provided by his close friend and personal chef. (who travels with him to each post with his wife and young boy.)
Our evening concert was standing-room only in a large assembly hall...about 800 or so, mostly students. We're never really sure what to expect from each audience, but as soon as we began to play we were delighted with the joy and attention that was paid to the music. Every little musical idea was appreciated with applause!
Our encore ( a funky version of "Everyday I Have the Blues") brought the crowd to the front of the stage where they began dancing to the groove. They they rushed to get autographs and photos with us. Ahh, it was beautiful. Before leaving we were treated to a soulful serenade of gospel vocalise with a group of young singers. (will post audio / video soon) It was a night to remember.
We'll also remember our friend Leanord Triyonoe, Cultural Affairs Specialist, who was with us throughout our stay in Indonesia. His sincerity and good humor left a lasting impression on all of us.
